Freja joined the Bright Team a few months ago as our Content Marketing Specialist at our Stockholm office! Interested in her story? Keep on reading to find out what it’s like to manage marketing across borders, how she balances international vibes with local focus, and what a typical day looks like at our Stockholm office.
What initially attracted you to join this company, and how has the experience lived up to your expectations so far?
I really wanted to join a growing company where I could actively contribute to its expansion. Having a background in SaaS, I was looking for that same fast-paced energy, but I also wanted those true international vibes where you feel connected to colleagues from Oslo all the way to France. On top of that, I wanted to market a strong product, which is every marketer's dream!
The experience has been great so far. I actually just came back from a trip to our Belgian headquarters, where I finally got to meet all of my international colleagues face-to-face.
How would you describe the onboarding process you went through a few months ago? What made it successful from a distance?
The onboarding was incredibly smooth because I had constant support. My colleagues here in Sweden were right beside me, and the team in Belgium was always ready to hop onto a quick call whenever I had a question.
What really made it successful was that I received a similar onboarding to our sales colleagues. Going through the same platform and finance training allowed me to deeply understand the core pain points we solve for CFOs and finance leaders. Having that foundational knowledge makes it so much easier to communicate our value proposition clearly to the market!
What does a typical workday look like for you, working from Sweden with a team based in Belgium?
No two days are ever the same! The only real constant is our morning check-in to align focus. Most of my daily work entails keeping our website sharp and up-to-date, organizing our upcoming breakfast sessions across the Nordics, and creating engaging content for our social media platforms. I also spend a lot of time just listening to the sales conversations happening around me in the Stockholm office. It’s the absolute best way to find inspiration for my next content idea.
How is it to work in a scale-up environment, and what is it like working from Sweden with an HQ in Belgium?
Working in a scale-up is fast-paced, dynamic, and everyday brings something completely different. There is an undeniable amount of fun and energy that comes naturally with a growing company!
Collaborating with Belgium from Sweden works incredibly well. We have daily contact with our international colleagues through constant 1:1s and structured marketing meetings. You never feel isolated because you know everyone is only a huddle or a phone call away.
What do you think is the secret to making a cross-border collaboration like ours work so smoothly, and how do you experience the level of trust?
The absolute secret is having mutual trust in each other to get the work done. You simply cannot perform in an international setup without that autonomy to drive new ideas and execute your own ways of working. The same way I trust the team to do their work, they trust me to deliver mine.
To keep the gears turning, we rely heavily on tools like Monday to maintain visibility on the big-picture projects, and we are always chatting, collaborating, and staying connected on Slack and other tools.
What is the number one skill you think someone needs to thrive in a cross-border role like yours?
You definitely need high English proficiency, though you might as well pick up a few useful Dutch words along the way when visiting HQ! Beyond language, you need a genuine openness to different cultures and working styles, paired with the flexibility to quickly pivot what you are doing when things move fast.
What advice would you give to other professionals who are considering joining an international team like ours?
I would tell them to fully embrace it! It is an incredibly fun and rewarding environment where you will spend one meeting deep in content strategy and SEO, and the very next meeting playfully arguing with international colleagues about whether a sandwich counts as a breakfast or a lunch food. For the record, it is definitely a breakfast food!
